WWII Style Hangar Dance Oct 31st, Fly-In Nov.1st
It’s Official. WWII Style Hangar dance Oct 31st, Fly in Nov 1st.
Airplane Rides!!
Our fly-in (and museum, for that matter), is different than most. We love all the airplanes flying in, but we absolutely LOVE having our local citizens come out and enjoy the activities. It's just not right to host an event like this without offering the folks a way to get a little air under their feet, so this year we’ve partnered with Vintage Air Tours to provide “Old Timey” airplane rides in their beautiful Stearman and Navion on Oct 31st and Nov. 1st. These guys are super professional and are all about giving rides and having fun! It’s what they do at their home field in Rockport, and their beautiful aircraft just ooze history. Take a peek at their website by clicking the link below. They’re also taking advance bookings for flights through the links below. I promise you’ll love the flight, and we’re super excited to have them join us this year!!
Check out their website, see the event on facebook, or use the button below to book a flight.
About the dance: Well, to be honest, the night before the fly-in we're here, up all night manning (and Ladying??... doesnt sound right) the BBQ pits. So, in that light we sortof thought "hmmm, lets have something going on in the hangar for the early birds to enjoy". The main hangar is cleaned out anyway, lets put on some old time WWII planes & music together and have a little fun. We've got a couple of hotels in town folks seem to like, and I'll update this with a B&B list as soon as I have one compiled. It also is worth mentioning some folks camp and bring RV's (the big camper kind), and thats always fine with us. Warning though, it's going to be pretty low key. No big bands were available, so its basically going to be Glen Miller and the gang on the radio, and a big empty hangar to shake a leg in. Somehow, I think we'll have a good time.
About the Fly In: Why change a good thing? It's pretty much the same as every year - Old School Cool Planes, Pilots & Cars, Mouth watering BBQ, Hit and Miss Ice Cream, (Come hungry) and good old family friendly fun. The High School Students will be out in force and will be really proud to answer questions about the Piper J3 Cub they're rebuilding. We'll have the old veterans from our retirement home again, as always. A new plan for this year is hitching our old tractor to a hay ride wagon and carrying folks around to see the airplanes, so if you wind up parking down the runway a bit, no worries, we got you covered!
Other Goodies!
We'll have the usual swag on sale... shirts, hats, etc. The 100 HP J-3 Raffle Cub will be available for viewing and tickets can be purchased on site. Come give her a look over... we promise you wont be disappointed!
IF YOUR FLYING IN...
We won't be using the grass area for takeoffs and landings during the fly-in unless you get here very early or leave late. By necessity, we park airplanes on it during the days activities.
Monitor 122.9. We will be monitoring as well. I'm not sure what the wind will be, but both 17 and 35 have left traffic patterns. Please follow current FAA guidlines and be aware we have a significant number of no radio aircraft.
Workers will be wearing lime green shirts that say TBM CREW. Most are the High School Aeronautics Class kids. If you have any questions, as them, they'll know. Plus, you'll like them.
Park as directed, watch for pedestrians and be safe.
Why wait for an event?
There doesn’t need to be a fly-in for you to visit. Drop us a line and we’ll be glad to show you around. There’s lots to see and do around here…lots of great food, the painted churches, and we’ll keep you entertained, that’s for sure. Our hours are inconsistent, so please call first if you’d like to see the airplanes. it’s never an imposition and we’ll put on the dog for you! (sorry)

“Stick-and-rudder” camps
In early June we brought three students from Parks College of Engineering, Aviation and Technology for a week to fly the Cubs. It was a blast. They stayed a week, learning to fly tailwheel aircraft, doing spin training, and getting 10–12 hours each in vintage aircraft, including the Stearman. We flew twice daily, and Miss Lisa cooked dinner for a family-style meal each night. Talk about fun.
Well, in that spirit, we decided to offer “Stick and rudder” camps throughout the year. The training will be available to anyone (certain limits apply), and a few scholarships will be made available to students at Aeronautical Universities. We are working out the details and costs, but it’s a pretty great opportunity to fly vintage aircraft that are not too readily available. All the training will be done in our Cubs and Stearman, but we may also include a little Staggerwing training in the curriculum for the more advanced students. We’ll post the details on a separate page once we get situated.
